CFK: Argentina must be defended against economic aggression

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has praised efforts to integrate Argentina's armed forces into a wider role in civil society, as well as underlining that the nation must be protected from all type of attacks, be they military or economic.

"There have been many great advances in the integration of the armed forces," the head of state explained in her address before the traditional Camaraderie Dinner, held in the 'Condor Building' Ministry of Defence headquarters.

Cristina underlined that members of the military had been used "in all types of emergencies," as she toasted armed forces and government officials present at the function.

The president also referred to the seizing of the Libertad frigate in Ghana due to an attempt by 'vulture funds' to seize the military asset, holding up the episode as an example of how attacks on the country can come from anywhere.

"The nation is not only defended with a pistol, but also when we are economically assaulted," she fired.

"Those Navy officers and personnel who were retained in Ghana as if they were hostages of the vulture funds must feel very honoured because they showed a dignified attitude that typifies the best traditions of the armed forces that gave us freedom."

Defence minister Agustín Rossi, Armed Forces leader general Luis Carena, Army head lieutenant general César Milani, Navy chief Gastón Erice and the Air Force's brigadier Mario Callejo were also present at the event.
